A field of 748 runners and walkers of all ages took part in the Fourth Royal Resorts Foundation Race on Sunday, February 17, 2019 in Cancun Hotel Zone. The race cause: to raise money for education and provide scholarships for students to enable them to go to university.

The morning dawned fine with a breeze from the southeast, which strengthened even further by the time the race started. It didn’t seem to deter the competitors though and they were soon on their way towards El Mirador.

The field of competitors included Royal Resorts employees, 40 Royal Resorts members and guests and local runners who joined in to support the cause. They ran 3, 5 or 10 kilometers, did the 3-kilometer walk and the Fun Run for children.

The community spirit and family atmosphere was fantastic and everyone enjoyed the event, including the pre-race warm up led by members of the Social Activities team.

Changing lives, Royal Resorts Foundation volunteers donate hearing aids

Many of our members and staff give back to the community and help change lives by donating to Royal Resorts Foundation community and conservation causes. For some this also includes contributing their time and skills as Royal Resorts Foundation volunteers. We recently met two Royal Resorts members from Canada, Dr. Gregory Mistal (Doctor of Audiology at Kennedy Hearing Centre, Coquillan, British Columbia) and Mrs. Barbara Mistal who generously gave their time and expertise during their vacation at The Royal Haciendas to carry out 11 days of hearing tests for Royal Resorts staff and their families. They also donated 55 hearing aids to patients ranging from an eight-year-old girl to the 96-year-old father of an employee.

Dr Mistal has been a hearing specialist for 47 years and during his career he has collaborated in hearing programs for indigenous communities in northern Canada and in the Amazon region of Ecuador. He says, “It’s been my life, I’ve been an audiology specialist for 47 years, and I love it.”

He tells us what made them decide to volunteer during their Royal Resorts vacation. “We first stayed at The Royal Mayan and we saw people greeting the staff as though they were family and when we talked to the employees we found that many of them had been with Royal Resorts for 25 years. Everyone seemed so happy, visitors and staff. We said to ourselves, what is this place? We wanted to know more about the Royal Resorts community and we became members at The Royal Haciendas. We have been made to feel so welcome by everyone over the years and we just wanted to give something back. We saw a Royal Resorts Foundation flyer and decided to volunteer. This is our second year of doing hearing tests; in 2018 we did it at The Royal Haciendas and this year in Cancun too.”

Anyone who has a relative or friend coping with deafness has seen the signs as their hearing loss worsens. They become quieter and often withdrawn, frustrated if they don’t catch something you say or misinterpret it, and they lose confidence. Over time, they can become cut off from their loved ones and the world.

Hearing tests and aids are expensive and people will often cope with hearing loss rather than seek help. Through the Royal Resorts Foundation and the Human Development department, Royal Resorts employees were invited to make an appointment for themselves or for relatives to see Dr. Mistal.

Barbara Mistal says, “I lost count of how many people we saw during the 11 days of tests but there were many of them. We donated 55 hearing aids to patients that needed them and boxes of batteries too. We also did several ear cleaning procedures and the patients immediately noticed the difference.

“The hearing aids are brand new and we purchase them back home,” Dr. Mistal explains “They are from lines that have been discontinued in Canada but that are still available elsewhere.”

He adds, “We look at everyone who needs help. One of our patients was a quiet eight-year-old girl called Rafaella with 60 percent hearing loss. We gave her two hearing aids and it was the start of a new life for her. She was immediately on Facebook with her friends showing them photos of her hearing aids, she was so happy! It was her birthday too and the whole family came the next day to thank us. We also gave a hearing aid to an employee at The Royal Haciendas who is a grandmother and she asked if she could bring her granddaughter in who is nine years old and it turned out that she needed one too, so we were able to help them both.

“Last year we met David, the 14-year-old son of a The Royal Cancun employee who is totally deaf in one ear and has 10 percent hearing in the other,” relates Barbara Mistal. “He was unresponsive, literally in his own world, we couldn’t get a smile out of him. We were able to give him a power hearing aid and this year he is a different boy, smiling and outgoing. We were also happy to hear that the Royal Resorts Foundation is arranging for him to have speech therapy as part of the Employee Emergency Relief program.

“One elderly gentleman in a wheelchair traveled 15 hours by bus from Veracruz to see us,” says Dr. Mistal. “And when I fitted hearing aids for the 96-year-old he just put his head on my shoulder and hugged me. We have seen faces light up in joy and we have shared smiles, tears and laughter. It means so much to them and their loved ones. We are happy to be able to help them.”

A heartfelt thank-you to Dr. and Mrs. Mistal for their kindness and generosity, for being Royal Resorts Foundation volunteers and helping to change lives.

Royal Resorts takes part in Earth Hour 2019

On Saturday March 30 at 8:30 p.m., Royal Resorts will be turning the lights off for Earth Hour 2019, the global campaign organized by WWF, to draw attention to the accelerating effects of climate change and biodiversity loss and the urgent need to do everything we can to protect our planet.

Non-essential lights will be turned off around the resorts in Cancun and The Royal Haciendas and we hope that our members and guests will join in by dimming the lights in their villas and attending special Earth Hour activities.

Grand Residences will also be participating in Earth Hour 2019 with its own program of activities.

In 2018, 188 countries took part in Earth Hour and the lights on close to 18,000 of the world’s most famous landmarks were dimmed. Millions of people came together to take action and make their pledges to protect the environment, whether at home, in the workplace or in their communities.

We will be publishing more news about Earth Hour 2019 activities at Royal Resorts and Grand Residences and our programs to help protect the planet on the Royal Resorts blog as the date approaches.

Say no to plastic shopping bags

The Royal Market, your Royal Resorts store, is doing what it can to help protect the planet and that includes reducing the use of plastic bags. Eco-friendly cloth bags are on sale at all our resort stores and the cashiers also invite shoppers to use the shopping trolleys to transport their purchases to their villas instead of using plastic bags.

Both are ways of reducing our consumption of single use plastic bags that are non-biodegradable and lethal to birds and marine life such as sea turtles and whales.

Members, watch out for timeshare scams

It is Royal Resorts policy to alert members about possible timeshare scams attempted by companies or individuals operating online. On this occasion we would like to share reports from members about suspicious emails and phone calls received from individuals or brokerage companies regarding their Royal Resorts membership.

The latest incident involves a company called Accord Title & Escrow A. LLC. The member who reported it asked us to warn fellow members. A representative of this company promised her shares for The Royal Caribbean. In order to accept this offer, she would have to pay 2 percent of the value of the shares within 48 hours. She received a certificate with a Royal Holiday Vacation Club logo. We would like to point out that neither of these companies are part of the Royal Resorts group and Royal Resorts has no business relationship with them.

Some members recently received calls and emails from a William Pina who falsely claims to work for Royal Resorts. Individuals representing a company called Diamond Title Services, LLC have contacted other members offering to facilitate the sale of shares or stock with Royal Resorts. They have sent members email certificates that display the Royal Resorts logo and state the value of the supposed shares that will be given to them by Diamond Title on payment of an administrative fee running into thousands of dollars.

Another company called Imperial Brokers has made similar offers to members of The Royal Caribbean and Grand Residences owners.

Diamond Title and Imperial Brokers appear to be operating out of Illinois, New Jersey, New York and Texas, although the addresses may be false. Their use of the Royal Resorts logo and brand name is unauthorized. The offers they are making and their claims to have information from Royal Resorts are false.

These companies and individuals use similar methods. They tell members that they have shares or stocks with Royal Resorts and list the value of the supposed shares that the member will receive on payment of an administrative fee or a percentage of the total. They may show the member fake email certificates or paperwork and they mention that time is running out in order to create a sense of urgency to convince them to take action.

We recommend that you do not engage with any of these individuals or companies and do not send them money, give them information or sign any documents. They are offering something that does not exist. Royal Resorts is not a publicly traded company and therefore is not in the stock market.  It is a private company and its shares are not for sale.  Members have Residual Rights, which are not the same as shares.  These Residual Rights are handled directly by the membership company of each one of our resorts and there is no third party intervention between the membership company and its members.

When individuals or companies contact you via email, the Internet or phone to offer unsolicited broker, resale, exchange or rental services and ask for cash in advance to cover “administrative fees” “guarantees” or “deposits” it is generally a good indication that they may not be genuine and if you pay it is very possible that you will not hear from them again.

Royal Resorts protects your personal information

Royal Resorts has a rigorous privacy policy and is in full compliance with privacy laws. Our members’ personal information is confidential and we do everything possible to protect it. We do not sell and have never sold personal information to third parties.

Always follow these steps if you receive a suspicious email or phone call:

  • Check the source of the email if the company or individual claims to be associated with Royal Resorts. All Royal Resorts communications are sent from an official royalresorts.com email address, if this is not the case, then the email is not from Royal Resorts.
  • Disregard the email or phone call if money is requested in advance for resale or other timeshare-related services.
  • Do not supply personal data or the contact details of friends if referrals are requested.
  • Do an online background check on the company to see if it is legitimate.
  • Ask Royal Resorts if you are in any doubt, we are here to help you.
  • Above all, do not send any money.

We recommend that you avoid disclosing your personal information on forums, blogs and other open media venues and participation in Internet referral schemes that ask you to send the names and details of friends. When you provide your information to others in order to rent, sell or lend your unit please ensure that your information will be protected.

Preserving Mexican culinary traditions: third place for Hacienda Sisal in national competition

Cancun Mexican restaurant Hacienda Sisal came third in Ven a Comer 2018, a national food competition showcasing restaurants and companies that preserve and promote traditional Mexican cuisine, ingredients and liquors such as tequila and mezcal.

Ven a Comer is a nationwide competition organized by the Mexican Tourism Board to draw attention to Mexico’s rich culinary heritage (it is in the UNESCO World Heritage list) and the restaurants, chefs and cooks and food production companies that are preserving it, whether by using locally sourced ingredients, authentic recipes and cooking techniques passed down through the generations or serving tequila, mezcal, sotol and other national liquors.

There is also a category for companies, cooperatives and farmers growing and promoting Mexican crops, herbs, spices, organic coffee, chocolate, cheeses, wines and much more.

Located next to The Royal Sands in the Cancun Hotel Zone, Hacienda Sisal served classic Mexican dishes such as Chicken in Mole, a smooth rich sauce made with spices, chocolate and a hint of chili; Mixiote, lamb wrapped in a maguey leaf and slow-cooked; Carnitas, marinated pork; Cochinita Pibil, a slow-roasted pork recipe from the Yucatan; Veracruz-style fish in a tomato sauce and a range of traditional antojitos or appetizers such as sopes, tostadas, tacos, crisp fried tacos or flautas and quesadillas made with blue corn and Oaxaca cheese.

Thursday is Pozole day at Hacienda Sisal and the hearty broth with pork or chicken, hominy and all the classic garnishes of shredded lettuce, radish, onion, oregano and fried tortilla strips is on the menu for lunch and dinner.

On Sunday, the popular Hacienda Sisal Brunch buffet is a mouthwatering spread of Mexican appetizers and traditional breakfast dishes.

In addition to serving authentic Mexican dishes, ingredients and salsas, Hacienda Sisal has an extensive list of Mexican craft beers, wines and liquors such as tequila, mezcal and sotol, with Xtabentun liqueur from the Yucatan as the perfect after-dinner drink.

The 2018 Ven a Comer national winner in the restaurant category was Kinich, a family-owned restaurant in Izamal, Yucatan, acclaimed for its authentic Yucatecan cuisine.
