In 1974 Christel and Jon deHaan founded the first RCI office in Indianapolis, facilitating vacation exchanges among 453 subscribing members.  In 1976, it opened its first international office, in Mexico. The concept of vacation exchange proved so popular that by 1985, it was welcoming its 1000th affiliated resort to the vacation network. By 1989, it had one million members and offices in Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa.

In 1991, RCI launched its Gold Crown Resort quality recognition program and by 1994, its 20th anniversary, it had 3,400 employees and 54 offices in 26 countries.

Growth continued and in 2000 it launched the RCI Points Program, followed in 2002 by the world’s first luxury exchange network A & K Registry, now The Registry Collection®. By 2004, RCI had three million members and it welcomed its 4,000th affiliated resort in 2008.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2014, RCI has more than 3.7 million members worldwide and facilitates around 1.9 million vacation exchanges each year.

At the 2014 ARDA Conference in April, RCI won nine prestigious ARDA awards including ACE Customer Service in the Industry Partner category.
