A Year of Helping Those in Need

From study scholarships at a Cancun school to cancer screening and physiotherapy for children with mobility and neurological challenges, conservation and the team member relief fund, the Royal Resorts Foundation helps those in need. In 2023, US$100,000 was raised for Royal Resorts Foundation causes, more than US$1 million in the last 12 years. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your donations and for giving back to the community. Together we can change even more lives.

Children’s scholarships

The Royal Resorts Foundation awards scholarships to a class of 36 girls attending Colegio Mano Amiga, the school in the Ciudad de la Alegria community center on the outskirts of Cancun. Some of our scholarship students have been with us from primary school and they are now studying the second year of high school. In 2023, the Foundation awarded grants to more pupils to enable them to catch up with their studies in the wake of the pandemic.

Colegio Mano Amiga students come from families living in marginalized areas of Cancun, some from single parent households or vulnerable backgrounds overshadowed by poverty and other social problems that would make it impossible for the child to continue studying if not for this support.

Our students dream of going to college and of being doctors, nurses, teachers, engineers and lawyers. The Royal Resorts Foundation annual donation to the Colegio Mano Amiga scholarship program gives them a way to achieve their goal and a future filled with hope and opportunities.

Four college students attending La Salle University also receive scholarships.

Life-changing physiotherapy for children

The Royal Resorts Foundation sponsors seven children with motor and neurological challenges so that they can attend the CRIT or Cancun Rehabilitation Center for regular sessions of physical therapy and hydrotherapy. Depending on the child’s particular needs, treatment may also include visits to the speech therapist, hearing specialist and occupational therapist to help improve their mobility, motor and communication skills and give them a better, happier life. A psychologist also offers therapy sessions for the families to help them handle their child’s medical condition.

Vital Screening and Treatment for Cancer Patients

Breast cancer and prostate cancer screening programs help hundreds of Royal Resorts team members each year.

Help for Royal Resorts team members in times of need

The Royal Resorts Foundation is always there for its team members in times of need. Through the Team Member Emergency Relief Fund, it offers a helping hand to those coping with grave illnesses, major surgery or accidents in the family, alleviating the financial burden on the household, and giving them support to cope with the challenge.

Over the years, the Team Member Relief Fund has helped staff with a variety of health problems, including financial aid to cover the cost of open-heart surgery and kidney transplants and emergency care for a case of acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis. Team members with chronic ailments have had cornea, hip and knee replacements or cataract operations. Others have received help when facing cancer surgery and chemotherapy. Cases range from treatment for children with epilepsy and spina bifida to hearing aids and life-changing speech therapy for a deaf boy with a speech disability.

Community action

Support is given to community centers, giving a helping hand to teenagers at risk, single mothers and people living with HIV. Other initiatives during the year bring moments of happiness to children and senior citizens living alone.

Royal Resorts continues to collaborate in Parque Cancun with landscaping support for the city’s newest green area. The children’s playground purchased with the money raised from the 2023 Royal Resorts Foundation Race now provides hours of fun for all children, including those with mobility and visual challenges.

Protecting the planet

Royal Resorts is a longtime supporter of conservation. Through an alliance with Cancun nonprofit Amigos de Sian Ka’an A.C., the Royal Resorts Foundation contributes to the protection of the area’s fragile ecosystems and rare wildlife.

Amigos de Sian Ka’an projects include the protection of jungle and wetland ecosystems in Sian Ka’an and elsewhere in the Mexican Caribbean. With other area biologists and conservationists, they are working for the creation of more reserves and of wildlife corridors linking reserves that are vital for species such as the jaguar, puma and ocelot.

A team of hydrologists is developing a water management plan to protect the area’s underground rivers and cenotes and working with international scientists to map them. Other experts are conducting climate change studies and monitoring coral reef health and fish populations.

Amigos de Sian Ka’an staff also have an important environmental education role and have projects to promote sustainable development and the Maya Ka’an ecotourism destination, promoting community tourism in villages in Sian Ka’an and the Zona Maya, among others.
