Big Sky

Kate Atkinson
The latest in Kate Atkinson’s series of books about likeable former cop and private eye Jackson Brodie, his complicated relationship with ex-wife actress Julia, his uncommunicative 13-year-old son Nathan and soon-to-be-wed daughter Marlee.

Jackson is covering a simple case of infidelity when he stumbles across a network of human trafficking in northern England that dates back decades and involves a conspiracy at the highest levels of society.

During the course of the investigation, he saves a man from suicide, rescues a kidnapped girl and realizes that one of his clients has secrets from her youth that are coming back to haunt her and threaten her children.

Jackson joins forces with two women from his past, Tatiana, an enigmatic Russian waitress and as he correctly surmises, potential hired assassin, and Reggie, a young police officer who is also working on the human trafficking case.

Kate Atkinson is a compelling storyteller and it is impossible to put down any of her books, whether they are thrillers or historical fiction, once you start reading them.

A Suitable Boy

Vikram Seth
The story of university student Lata and her mother Mrs. Rupa Mehra who has made it her mission to find her daughter a “suitable boy” to marry. Needless to say, Lata does not agree with her mother’s views and falls for someone entirely different. This story of four families and a host of other characters is a rich tapestry of Indian life in the years following Independence from British rule and Partition.

A Suitable Boy is being broadcast as a BBC mini series directed by Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding) and adapted by Andrew Davis (War and Peace, Pride and Prejudice).
