If you have finished all the books you brought down with you and urgently need some more beach reads, the Needful Things store on Avenida Coba in Downtown Cancún and Alma Libre in Puerto Morelos both have a good selection of secondhand titles.

Each summer, we eagerly await the arrival of our oceangoing visitors, the sea turtles that nest on beaches throughout the Mexican Caribbean, and at 12:30 a.m. on June 13, The Royal Sands welcomed its first turtle of 2009. The green turtle in question dug her nest in the sand in front of Building A and laid a staggering 120 eggs! Security staff then collected the eggs and moved them to the safety of the corral where they will hatch in 45 to 60 days.
Royal Resorts has been participating in the statewide turtle campaign since 1985 and is proud to help protect these beautiful, ancient and sadly endangered creatures.
We all dream about a once in a lifetime adventure, whether it is sailing the South Pacific, staying at a chateau in the Loire Valley or playing golf at St. Andrews, but did you know that you can have your own unforgettable experience right here in the Mexican Caribbean? Apart from the mysteries of the ancient Mayan cities that dot the peninsula, you can take to the water for a trip to see the whale sharks, the largest fish in the world.
These gentle giants, yes, they are plankton feeders, spend the summer months in an area off the coast of Holbox and Cabo Catoche, the northern tip of the state of Quintana Roo, where the waters of the Caribbean mingle with those of the Gulf of Mexico. Mexican scientists have been able to identify around 200 whale sharks in the area and believe that this is the largest gathering in the world. International research findings reveal that whale sharks are great ocean travelers, congregating in a handful of spots around the world such as Australia, Fiji, the Sea of Cortez, Quintana Roo, Belize and Honduras to feed and breed.
In recognition of its importance for migrating whale sharks, Mexican President Felipe Calderon recently declared this stretch of ocean off Holbox a biosphere reserve, thus extending the Yum Balam Reserve which already protects the area‚ coastal wetlands and lagoons.
If you would like to meet the pez domino as local fishermen affectionately call it in reference to its speckled and striped markings, Thomas More Travel offers an amazing nature trip that gives you the chance to swim and snorkel with these peaceful creatures in the company of a knowledgeable guide.

Turtle Season is Here Again
Members of the Royal Resorts security staff have begun to patrol the beach in front of the Cancun resorts on the lookout for our very special summer visitors, the female sea turtles that come ashore at night to lay their eggs in the sand. The Mexican Caribbean is an important nesting area for rare green and loggerhead turtles and biologists, hotel personnel and conservationists watch over the creatures as they laboriously dig their nests. The eggs are subsequently collected and moved to a corral above the high water mark where they hatch 45 to 60 days later.
Resort guests may be lucky enough to have a National Geographic experience and watch one of these beautiful and ancient creatures from a distance as its lays its eggs, or participate in one of the turtle releases later in the summer.  Royal Resorts has been participating in the annual Cancun Turtle Conservation campaign since 1985.
