Punta Maroma<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A perfect crescent of white sand between Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen, Punta Maroma is one of the Riviera Maya\u2019s most beautiful beaches. Spend the day relaxing on the sand, swimming and snorkeling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Xcacel\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Xcacel<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This pristine crescent-shaped bay in the Riviera Maya is one of the world\u2019s most important nesting beaches for green and loggerhead turtles and the state government designated it a sea turtle sanctuary to protect the shoreline. The mangroves and forest behind the beach are also rich in wildlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rio Secreto<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Explore the Mayan underworld in the Riviera Maya. Deep in the limestone rock lies a labyrinth of caves and cenotes that the ancient Maya believed were portals to the realm of the gods. In the jungle, just south of Playa del Carmen, Rio Secreto is one such place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take a guided tour of this beautiful cave system with its still clear pools that mirror the columns, stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over millions of years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Ek<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Ek Balam<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A 20-minute drive to the north of Valladolid in the neighboring state of Yucatan is the ancient city of Ek Balam, which means \u201cblack jaguar or star jaguar\u201d in Maya. The city flourished between AD 600-900 when it had political and trade links with other city states in the Maya World, including Chichen Itza. Its crowning glory is the stucco fa\u00e7ade on the upper level of the 31-meter-high Acropolis, which features the magnificent figures of ancient nobles, including one thought to be the founding ruler of the city. The figure\u2019s ornate feathered headdress resembles wings and led local people to refer to him as \u201cel angel\u201d or the angel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
