It is a celebration of the colorful world of Mexican handicrafts and the creativity of its artisans. Exquisite Talavera ceramics from Puebla and immense trees of life sculpted in clay dominate the rooms; there are displays of figurines ranging from the Virgin of Guadalupe, saints and mermaids to market vendors, skeleton mariachis and diablitos, fantastical<em> alebrije<\/em> wood carvings, glittering copper, silver and tin, and rainbow-colored textiles full of ancient symbolism.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-65541\" src=\"https:\/\/www.royalresorts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/san-bernardino-de-siena-valladolid.jpg\" alt=\"Convento San Bernardino, Valladolid\" width=\"845\" height=\"567\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.royalresorts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/san-bernardino-de-siena-valladolid.jpg 845w, https:\/\/www.royalresorts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/san-bernardino-de-siena-valladolid-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.royalresorts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/san-bernardino-de-siena-valladolid-768x515.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.royalresorts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/san-bernardino-de-siena-valladolid-705x473.jpg 705w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 845px) 100vw, 845px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3>Convento San Bernardino, Valladolid<\/h3>\n<p>Spend the morning in the colonial town of Valladolid and after you have explored the main square, stroll along Calzada de Los Frailes, a pedestrian-only street linking the center of town with San Bernardino Church and Sisal Convent.<\/p>\n<p>Founded by the Franciscan order in 1552, the San Bernardino monastery was the center of missionary work with Mayan communities in the eastern Yucatan. Resembling a fortress, it is built over an underground river called Sis-H\u00e1 (cold water in Maya) and has a network of tunnels leading away towards the city, which were used in times of strife. The church has an interesting altarpiece and several paintings of the saints.<\/p>\n<p>The monastery\u2019s history is entwined with legends of the notorious 17<sup>th<\/sup>-century pirate Lorenzillo, the scourge of Spanish ports in the region. He came to Valladolid seeking a local girl he had fallen in love with. The colonial authorities seized him, and he was thrown in a monastery cell to await execution. He lived to fight another day however, as his crew mounted a daring raid on the town to rescue him.<\/p>\n<p>There is a video mapping show on the monastery fa\u00e7ade from Thursday to Tuesday at 9 p.m. in Spanish and 9:30 p.m. in English (free admission).<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-65555\" src=\"https:\/\/www.royalresorts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/uayma-yucatan.jpg\" alt=\"Uayma\" width=\"845\" height=\"567\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.royalresorts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/uayma-yucatan.jpg 845w, https:\/\/www.royalresorts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/uayma-yucatan-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.royalresorts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/uayma-yucatan-768x515.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.royalresorts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/uayma-yucatan-705x473.jpg 705w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 845px) 100vw, 845px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3>Uayma<\/h3>\n<p>If you are Valladolid-bound, take a short detour to visit the nearby village of Uayma and its colorful parish church. Dating from 1646, this architectural gem is painted in vibrant reddish-brown, white and blue and the <em>ajaracas<\/em> or bas-reliefs of flowers, stars and ties on the facade show Moorish inspiration.
