{"id":52137,"date":"2011-07-25T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-07-25T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/royalresorts.com\/blog\/celebrating-mayan-culture\/"},"modified":"2021-11-30T17:04:24","modified_gmt":"2021-11-30T17:04:24","slug":"celebrating-mayan-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.royalresorts.com\/blog\/news\/celebrating-mayan-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating Mayan Culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p>On <strong>July 25<\/strong>, staff and guests at <a title=\"The Royal Haciendas | Royal Resorts \" href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/cicDid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Royal Haciendas<\/strong><\/a> in <strong>Playa del Carmen<\/strong> will join to pay homage to the <strong>Maya<\/strong>, one of the great ancient civilizations of the Americas.<\/p>\n<p>The day chosen is auspicious because according to the sacred <strong>Tzolkin<\/strong> almanac, one of the three principal calendars they used in their sophisticated system of time measurement, it is a day of transition, a <strong>zero day<\/strong> between the end of one cycle and the dawn of a new year. Many people refer to it as the <strong>Day out of Time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The day started with <strong>yoga<\/strong> and <strong>meditation on the beach<\/strong> and a <strong>Maya lesson on the terrace<\/strong>. Pool aerobics will take place to the accompaniment of Mayan music and at noon, guests can learn about and participate in the ancient<em> juego de pelota<\/em> or Mayan ball game.<\/p>\n<p>During the day, children will be able to participate in <strong>fun activities with a Mayan theme <\/strong>such as pyramid sand castle building, Mayan games and a Mayan treasure hunt at <strong>3:30 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There will be <strong>Mayan dances for all at 3:30 p.m<\/strong>., culminating in the <strong>pre-Hispanic ballet<\/strong> called <strong>The Day Out of Time<\/strong> on the beach in front of <strong>La Palapa del Sol<\/strong> restaurant at <strong>6:30 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At <strong>4 p.m<\/strong>., keen oarsmen will take to the water in their kayaks for a tournament in the bay. It is a way of remembering the ancient Mayan pilgrims who made the crossing to the sacred island of <strong>Cozumel <\/strong>to pray at the shrine of <strong>Ixchel<\/strong>, the goddess of fertility and childbirth, thousands of years ago, and the intrepid traders who traveled great distances in wooden canoes, forging one of the greatest trade networks in the Americas.<\/p>\n<p>The chefs at <a title=\"The Royal Haciendas | Royal Resorts \" href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/cicDid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Royal Haciendas<\/strong><\/a> have gone back to their roots to offer a <strong>special Mayan dinner menu <\/strong>as their tribute to this great culture. Available from <strong>6:30 p.m<\/strong>., it includes a selection of salads featuring <strong>chaya<\/strong>, jicama and orange, and beef salpicon, which is sometimes still prepared with venison or tzik in the Yucatan. The starters feature classics of the Yucatecan kitchen such as salbutes, panuchos, papadzules and tamales. Hot dishes include the all-time favorites <strong>Cochinita Pibil<\/strong> (tender suckling pig marinated in achiote and cooked in a pit), turkey in relleno negro and chicken in pipian sauce.<\/p>\n<p>During the day, the <strong>Spa will be offering a special herbal treatment <\/strong>based on the ancient <strong><em>temascal <\/em><\/strong>or <strong>steam lodge purification ritual <\/strong>used by the <strong>Maya<\/strong>, the <strong>Aztecs <\/strong>and other Native American cultures.
