\nTake an eco trip to see the flamingos in the Ria Lagartos Biosphere Reserve<\/strong><\/a>. Not only will you be treated to a vision in pink, you\u2019ll see herons, kingfishers, prehistoric horseshoe crabs, crocodiles, raccoons and more. Don\u2019t stop there, plan a visit to Sian Ka\u2019an Biosphere Reserve<\/strong><\/a> south of Tulum<\/strong><\/a>, it\u2019s the second largest reserve in Mexico<\/strong> and a wonderland of jungle, wetlands, beaches and coral reefs teeming with wildlife.<\/p>\n

Dive Deep<\/em><\/strong>
\nLearn how to dive. With the world\u2019s second longest coral reef on the doorstep, Cancun<\/strong> and the Riviera Maya<\/strong> are the ideal places to take the plunge and once you have mastered the basics there\u2019ll be no stopping you. You\u2019ll soon fall in love with the underwater world of the Mexican Caribbean.<\/strong>
\nSummer visitors also have a once in a lifetime opportunity to swim with the whale sharks<\/strong>, the world\u2019s largest fish. From mid-May to mid-September<\/strong>, these peaceful giants \u2013the size of a bus – gather to feed in the waters east of Isla Mujeres<\/strong> and Contoy<\/strong><\/a> and off the coast of Holbox<\/strong> and Cabo Catoche.<\/strong>

Time Travel<\/em><\/strong>

Explore the jungle city of Cob\u00e1<\/strong> or Ek Balam<\/strong>, Uxmal<\/strong> and the Puuc Route<\/strong> sites (like Chich\u00e9n Itz\u00e1<\/strong>, they have World Heritage status) in the state of Yucat\u00e1n. You could even organize a private tour and venture south to Kohunlich, Oxtankah <\/strong>and Dzibanche <\/strong>in southern Quintana Roo <\/strong>and the huge jungle stronghold of Calakmul<\/strong> in southern Campeche.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Colonial Charm<\/em><\/strong>
\nLeave ultramodern Canc\u00fan<\/strong> behind for a couple of days and head inland to see another side of the Yucat\u00e1n Peninsula<\/strong>. Explore the stately old Spanish churches and convents of Valladolid<\/strong> and Izamal.<\/strong> Ready for romance, head for M\u00e9rida<\/strong>, capital of the Yucat\u00e1n, where you can visit museums, art galleries and elegant mansions from the days of the henequen boom (late 19th and early 20th centuries), people-watch in tree-lined squares and enjoy dance performances, concerts and serenades every night of the week.<\/p>\n

Riviera Maya Revisited<\/em><\/strong>
\nRent a car, stock up on munchies at your resort store and go exploring. Spend the day snorkeling at Xel-Ha<\/strong>, see what\u2019s new at Xcaret <\/strong>or relax on a beach you have never been to before \u2013 Puerto Morelos<\/strong>, Paamul<\/strong>, Xpu-H\u00e1<\/strong>, Akumal<\/strong> and Tulum<\/strong><\/a> are all great spots and there are many more. On your way back home, call in at Playa del Carmen<\/strong> for a sunset cocktail, homemade gelato and a spot of shopping on Fifth Avenue.<\/p>\n
