Yachts set sail from St Petersburg, Florida on April 24 bound for Isla Mujeres. Their arrival marks a week of island festivities including the Amigos Race.<\/p>\n

May is a month of fierce competition for fishermen in Puerto Morelos as they compete in two international fishing tournaments. First up is the C\u00e9sar Martin Rosado Fishing Tournament on May 1-3. Later in the month, the Don Andr\u00e9s Garc\u00eda Lavin Tournament brings together even more competitors from all over the Mexican Caribbean and abroad, May 8-10.<\/p>\n

For the twelfth year running, keen sport fishermen gather on Isla Mujeres to take part in the Cosme Alberto Martinez Maga\u00f1a fishing tournament.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/4″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”3\/4″][dt_fancy_separator separator_style=”line” separator_color=”default”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/4″][vc_single_image image=”4566″ border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_self”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”3\/4″][vc_column_text]Sacred Mayan Crossing, Xcaret & Cozumel<\/strong><\/p>\n

May 22-23<\/strong><\/p>\n

For the ninth year running, visitors to the Mexican Caribbean in late May have the opportunity to witness the Traves\u00eda Sagrada Maya, the reenactment of an ancient Mayan pilgrimage to the sacred island of Cozumel to worship at the shrine of Ixchel, the goddess of the moon, fertility and childbirth. The rituals date from the Late Post-Classic period of Mayan history AD 1250-1519.<\/p>\n

After six months of arduous training, 350 oarsmen from Canc\u00fan, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen and further afield will board 35 authentic Mayan canoes made from hollowed out logs and make the crossing to Cozumel.<\/p>\n

The Sacred Mayan Journey begins with an evening event in Xcaret on May 21. The ancient temples in the park form the backdrop to a representation of the Ki-Huic or ancient market, a tribute to the importance of the Mexican Caribbean coast and Cozumel in the Mayan trade empire. There will be music, dance, rituals, offerings of food, and displays of the most important trade goods.<\/p>\n

At dawn on May 22, the oarsmen will set sail for Cozumel with the blessing of Mayan priests. The fleet of canoes is expected to arrive in Cozumel at around 1 p.m. on the same day and the pilgrims make their way to the shrine of Ixchel. On May 23 they leave the island en route for Xcaret where they are greeted with great joy.<\/p>\n
