Sea Turtle Season

Sea Turtle Season

May marks the start of the sea turtle nesting season in the Mexican Caribbean and female green and loggerhead turtles come ashore at night to lay their eggs on beaches throughout the area. Hawksbill turtles also nest on the shores of Contoy, Holbox and the Gulf coast, and the leatherback, the largest and rarest species in the world, is an occasional visitor.

All sea turtles are endangered species and an annual statewide campaign brings biologists, hotel workers, the armed forces and volunteers together to protect them. They patrol the beaches and when they detect a turtle laying her eggs, they watch over her until she has finished. At Royal Resorts, security guards move the eggs to a corral above the high-water mark where they hatch 45 to 60 days later. The hatchlings are subsequently released at dusk to begin life at sea.

Once again, Royal Resorts is preparing to welcome these very special summer visitors. The company has been participating in the sea turtle protection program since 1985.

Whether you are a first-time visitor or an old hand, Merida, the state capital of the Yucatan, is enchanting.

Museums, galleries and bustling squares lined with open-air cafes are matched by a collection of churches, civic buildings and mansions dating back to the 16th century. There’s a concert or event somewhere in the city every night of the week and to cap it all, it is the perfect base for exploring the surrounding area. Three World Heritage Sites – the ancient Mayan cities of Chichen Itza and Uxmal and the colonial port of Campeche – lie within easy driving distance. Thomas More Travel offers one and two-day trips to Merida and of course you can always stay longer.

Your Merida home is the El Castellano Hotel, located in the historic heart of the city, just two blocks from the main square and the Cathedral.
