Take to the Waves

Take to the Waves

How many times have you watched the boats sailing through the bay and wished that you were on board, about to embark on your own voyage of discovery in the Mexican Caribbean. With a yacht you can escape the crowds, visit Isla Mujeres, cruise the Nichupte Lagoon and explore the coast, seeking out the best spots for snorkeling and swimming.

Fifty percent of the members who took part in our three most recent surveys expressed an interest in boat trips as a way to enhance their vacation experience. In response to the demand, Royal Resorts is now offering the Performance Yacht Charter Club program. Read more

This pioneering concept gives you the chance to enjoy the benefits of yacht ownership at a fraction of the cost as you share investment, maintenance and operating costs with other charter club members. Simply select the day you would like to use a yacht and it is yours for the same day every year, guaranteed usage, just like your Royal Resorts membership. Built by the Brunswick Corporation, Sea Ray Sundancer 340 yachts score top marks in performance, reliability and comfort. These sleek 33-35 foot boats have luxury fittings and space for six passengers and the two crew members who will take care of you during your trip.

Your one-time Performance Yacht Charter Club agreement fee entitles you to use a yacht for the day you selected every year for ten years. You also pay an annual Maintenance and Operating fee which covers the crew, scheduled maintenance, wear and tear and operating costs. Fuel consumption, tips for the crew and any additional catering you may request are charged separately. Ask your Concierge about the program during your next stay and click here for more information.

The Performance Yacht Charter Club is an independent program and is not operated by Royal Resorts. Likewise it is a charter agreement, not a membership program.

Club Internacional de Cancun’s 2008 Improvement Plan

Club Internacional de Cancun’s 2008 Improvement Plan

As part of the program to start the new 30-year Membership program at Club Internacional de Cancun, the Developers are investing approximately $8,000,000 US in capital improvements.

One of the most important projects is the installation of new infrastructure for our water and electrical systems. This will include the construction of concrete trenches through which new pipes will run, facilitating scheduled inspections, maintenance and any necessary repairs. Electrical wiring, the chilled water for the air-conditioning system, phone and TV lines, and many other service lines will also run through these trenches.

This work will cause noise, dust and considerable inconvenience if carried out while Members and guests are on property. Our Members’ safety and comfort is always our number one consideration, and for this reason we have elected to close the resort for a temporary period in order to complete these important improvements.

Club Internacional de Cancun will therefore be closed for repairs commencing week 33, 2008 and will reopen for week 51, 2008. Our plan is to minimize the impact to Members of weeks 33 to 50, as well as eliminating any inconvenience whatsoever to Members of all other weeks.

During this time we will install a new swimming pool heating system which has beenrequested by many members and guests over the past few years. Furthermore, we will also be building an exercise facility and massage areas near the beach.

Some of the improvements scheduled to take place later this year have already been done, they include the restoration of the osmosis treatment water cistern below the parking lot which stores more than 400 cubic meters of water, the construction of the new power sub-station and the enlargement of the original power sub-station for a more reliable electrical infrastructure.

Other improvements already in place include free wireless “Hotspots” for those who like to stay connected while on vacation, the Express Food-To-Go Service which has been enthusiastically received by CIC Members, the one-way Food Delivery Service from La Palapa Restaurant and the Kid’s Club.

Please note that we will not be redecorating the villas as part of this remodeling program. Nevertheless, we will continue to keep them in prime condition for your enjoyment using a combination of preventive and corrective maintenance and equipment repair and replacement.

If you have any questions about any of these planned improvements, or indeed any issues or suggestions concerning Resort Operations, please do not hesitate to contact us by e-mail recepcioncic@royalresorts.com Go to the top of the page

Summer Opening for Phase III

The third phase of the resort will open this June with another 55 villas.

Dive Right In

The world’s second longest coral reef system runs south along the Riviera Maya coast and the diving is spectacular whether you choose Cozumel’s drop offs, the Puerto Morelos barrier reef or the fringing reefs in the Xpu-Ha-Akumal area. However, why not start in the Playa del Carmen area? The experienced dive masters at Dive Balam, the on-site dive center, know all the best spots for coral formations, reef fish and even where to spot seasonal visitors such as migrating whale sharks and manta rays. We have showcased three popular local dive sites to get you started:

Tortugas Reef

Yes, you’ve guessed it; this is the place to spot sea turtles! They seem to love it here and one diver reported seeing 20 during a recent trip. However, you’ll also see colorful sponges, angel fish, tarpon, groupers and nurse sharks. Depth: 54 feet/18 meters – 69 feet/23 meters.

Mama Viña Shipwreck

This shrimp boat was sunk in 1995 and was soon colonized by coral and a variety of marine life, including schools of jacks and grunts, barracudas, stingrays, green and spotted moray eels. The maximum depth is 81 feet/27 meters.

Moc-che

There are two reefs in this spot: Moc-che Bajo, the shortest reef in the Playa del Carmen area, but still home to a surprising variety of marine creatures, including sergeant majors, butterfly fish, pork fish, jacks and a green moray eel that lives in the tunnel at the end of the reef. Maximum depth is 39 feet/13 meters.

Moc-che Profundo is further from the shore and as its name implies, it lies in deeper water, the maximum depth is 81 feet/27 meters. Large schools of jacks and other reef fish congregate here along with turtles, stingrays, groupers and barracudas.

Delectable Dining

Always a favorite for its delicious a la carte menu and spectacular beachfront location, La Palapa del Sol also offers theme buffets during the week. On your next visit be sure to try them and for a truly special celebration, book a table for a Romantic Dinner on the beach. For more information on dining and evening entertainment at The Royal Haciendas read Royal Resorts News upon arrival at the resort and ask your Concierge.

Mexican Night

Welcome to Mexico, slip off your shoes and start your vacation with a traditional south-of-the-border party! Join us on Sunday evening on the terrace for a traditional buffet, the Margarita Fair, live mariachi and jarocho trio music, games, festivities and lots of fun.

La Rotonda

Tales of the Deep

Tales of the Deep

March heralds the beginning of the sport fishing season in the Mexican Caribbean and fishermen are keen to get out on a boat in search of their own big one. Marlin and sailfish migrate through area waters during the spring and you may also hook a dorado, tuna or wahoo, not to mention a barracuda. Local marinas adhere to the catch and release policy to help conserve fish stocks, but for most fishermen the thrill of the chase is all. Write your own fish story, contact Thomas More Travel for sport fishing trips. Coming soon, the First Cancun Billfish Classic Tournament, April 23 – 26.

Equinox at Chichen Itza

Equinox at Chichen Itza

If you are in Cancun or the Riviera Maya on March 21, the Spring Equinox, why not plan a visit to the archaeological site of Chichen Itza to watch an amazing spectacle that is testimony to the skill of ancient Mayan astronomers and architects. As the sun sets, triangles of light and shadow form along the face of the Pyramid of Kukulcan and merge with the head of a giant stone serpent at the foot of the temple, symbolizing the god Kukulcán (the feathered serpent) returning to earth to be with his people. This phenomenon is visible the day before and after the spring and fall Equinoxes (depending on cloud cover).

The Pyramid of Kukulcan may dominate the Great Plaza at Chichen Itza but it is by no means the only wonder at the site. Discover this UNESCO World Heritage Site, voted one of the Seven New Wonders of the World in a global poll in 2007. Thomas More Travel offers several different trips to Chichen Itza. Alternatively, rent a car and explore the eastern Yucatan at your own pace, calling in at the colonial town of Valladolid, Dzitnup Cenote and the Balancanche Caves en route or detouring to the archaeological site of Ek Balam, 20 minutes to the north of Valladolid.

Make it to Merida

Make it to Merida

Celebrating its 466th birthday this year, Merida, capital of the Yucatan is going from strength to strength. If you have never visited this stately old city plan a trip during your next vacation. You’ll fall in love with its tree-lined squares, colonial architecture, courtyard restaurants and lively cultural scene. If you have been there before, perhaps it’s time to pay a return visit.

Many of the historic buildings in the city center are being renovated and reopened as art galleries, restaurants, craft shops, boutique hotels and charming residences. There are more open-air cafes, museums and nightly events ranging from a performance of the dances traditionally staged during the Vaqueria or village fiesta that takes place in front of City Hall on Monday and the Santa Lucia Serenade on Thursday to the Heart of Mexico festival on Saturday. The Merida en Domingo gala takes place in the main square and surrounding streets and is a pleasant way to spend Sunday, sampling local food, purchasing crafts and enjoying Yucatecan music and dance.

Contact Thomas More Travel to organize your Merida trip. One-day and overnight trips are available, the latter including a tour of the ancient Mayan city of Uxmal. Of course, if you would like to stay longer and use Merida as a base to explore the Yucatan, staff can help you plan a longer trip.

News from the Life Extension Foundation - Wake up and Smell the Coffee

Take to the Waves

A forthcoming article in the British Journal of Nutrition, published online on December 6, 2007, reported the finding of Finnish researchers that an increased intake of coffee is associated with lower mortality over a 14.5 year period.

Dr Pertti Happonen and associates evaluated data from 311 men and 506 women born during or before 1920 who were part of a large study intended to evaluate falls in older individuals. Physical examinations were conducted upon enrollment between 1991 and 1992, and questionnaires were completed concerning smoking status, the presence of diabetes, amount of coffee intake, and other information. A second questionnaire was completed two to three years later. The participants were followed for mortality through 2005.

Over the follow-up period, 251 deaths occurred among the men, and 372 among women. For total mortality from all causes, and mortality from cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other or unknown causes, there was an association observed between the number of cups of coffee consumed and a decrease in the risk of death. Compared with drinking one to two cups coffee per day, each added cup lowered the risk of mortality by an average of 4 percent. When the follow-up period was divided into five year periods, the strength of coffee’s effect appeared to diminish during the final years of the study, although the researchers add that there was not enough evidence to conclude a constant linear decrease.

In an attempt to provide possible mechanisms for the finding, the authors list several diseases shown to be inversely associated with coffee intake, including Alzheimer’s disease, breast and colorectal cancer, asthma, and diabetes. They note that increased antioxidant capacity is one of coffee’s potential mechanisms against disease, and remark that the polyphenols in coffee are the greatest source of antioxidants in the diet of the Nordic population studied in this research. The effects of caffeine, as well, may have an impact on total mortality.

“The present study in a representative sample of older adults strengthens the findings in some previous studies among middle-aged individuals of a beneficial effect of moderate or heavy coffee consumption on the risk of death,” the authors conclude. “We expect results from more detailed studies in larger study populations to provide more insight about the advantages and disadvantages of coffee consumption, and to set critical recommendations of optimal consumption with regard to health.”

Mapping Underground Rivers

Divers, biologists, hydrologists, geologists and archaeologists all agree on one thing, the vulnerability of the Yucatán’s underground waterways and the need to protect them from pollution.

To this effect, in February a team of Austrian and Danish researchers working with NGO Amigos de Sian Ka’an, carried out the second phase of a survey to identify underground water sources in Tulum and northern Sian Ka’an. The longest underground rivers in the world discovered to date are located in this area.

They attached a powerful electromagnetic sensor to a Mexican Navy M1-17 helicopter and undertook a series of flights over the area. The sensor emits signals measuring the electrical resistance in the subsoil, detecting deposits of fresh and salt water deep in the rock. The data collected during the flights forms the basis for maps of the hydrological system.

The project began in April 2007 and is the first of its kind in Mexico and the first in the world to study a limestone landscape.

Once the Tulum map is completed, Amigos de Sian Ka’an will present the project to the local authorities, the scientific community and the tourist sector with the aim of developing a joint conservation strategy. Financial backing is needed to extend the study area and create a map showing all the state’s water sources. Such a map would help planners make decisions that affect the health of the aquifer, for example the location of garbage dumps and wells, detect threats to underground rivers and the knock-on consequences of contamination for coral reefs and marine life.

Cozumel’s Pirate Past

A monument to some of Cozumel’s most disreputable former inhabitants is being erected at Mezcalitos, where the highway across the island links up with the east coast road. The unsavory cast of characters includes Pierre Coulot, Captain Henry Morgan who reputedly hid out on the island and Miguel Molas, a 19th-century pirate who lived there for many years.

Watch out at ATMs

ATM fraud or “card skimming” is on the rise all over the world and the Mexican Caribbean is no exception. A Royal Resorts member recently became the victim of a scam when he used an ATM at the Banamex bank opposite The Royal Caribbean and asked us to warn members and guests to be vigilant.

After using the ATM in the foyer because the bank was closed, he held the door open for a couple waiting outside. The woman went in to use the ATM and couldn’t get out, the implication being that she had been “locked in” by the system. Her companion didn’t have a card and asked the member to help by running his card through the scanner to open the door.

On returning to the United States our member checked his account online and discovered a number of bogus ATM withdrawals, all made at the same HSBC cash dispenser in Mexico City Airport, some after he left Mexico. He realized that the “security scanner” attached to the foyer door was a fake and had been used to read his card number. The couple had watched him type in his PIN number and had memorized or filmed it.

Wherever you are in the world take care when you use an ATM.

  • Watch out for people loitering near ATMs
  • Cover your hand and the number pad as you type in your PIN
  • Examine the ATM and surrounding area before inserting your card, pay particular attention to the card slot and anything that could be used to conceal a camera. Unfortunately, some of the scanners and micro cameras used to record cash card numbers are so sophisticated that they are virtually undetectable.
  • Politely refuse if someone asks you to scan your card to open the door after you have used the ATM.
  • Report anything suspicious to bank staff.

Meet the New Member of the Family

When you visit the Curaçao Sea Aquarium, be sure to look out for Kayena, the latest dolphin calf to be born at the Dolphin Academy. Kayena is the offspring of mother Teresa and father Copan and came into the world on November 18, 2007. Both mother and daughter are doing well. Kayena is now drinking 15 liters of her mother’s milk a day and will begin to supplement this nutrient-rich diet with fish at the age of six months, only becoming fully weaned at the age of two.

Since 2004, four dolphins have now been born at the Dolphin Academy.

St. Maarten Carnival

Carnival season on St. Maarten is synonymous with pageants, colorful parades for children and adults in glittering costumes, headdresses and masks, spectacular floats, live music, dancing, spicy Caribbean cooking and street parties.

The longest Carnival season in the Caribbean, St. Maarten show time kicks off on March 29 with pageants and reaches a climax on Tuesday, April 29 with the Grand Parade.

There is a follow up procession on April 30, an International Show on May 1 and 2 and the closing J’ouvert or Jump-Up or street party is on May 3.

During the most important parade through the streets of Philipsburg, merrymakers burn an effigy of King Momo, the spirit of Carnival. In the past, the straw figure of Momo would have been torched to appease the gods; nowadays the custom is seen as a ritual cleansing of the community. The sins of the community and its misfortunes go up in smoke, paving the way for a year of good luck.

April 30 is a public holiday in the Netherlands Antilles to honor the birthday of the Dutch queen and Carnival celebrations are timed to coincide with this civic occasion. The French-side Carnival takes place in February or March during the five days preceding Ash Wednesday and is an equally joyous and colorful affair.

The 2008 Heineken Regatta

Conditions were breezy for the 28th Heineken Regatta which drew to a close on Sunday March 9 after three days of enthralling racing and on-shore fun. There was a record turnout in the categories of Spinnaker, Non Spinnaker, Bareboat, Multi-hull, Beach Cat and Open Class Boats, the finally tally of competitors was 284 boats crewed by over 2,500 sailors from 40 different countries.

The Heineken Regatta is one of the most important events in the Caribbean yachting calendar and waterfront revels matched the thrill of the races with parties and plenty of live music. This year Alison Hinds, the queen of Soca music from Barbados, performed at the Saturday night party in Marigot and the final awards party on Sunday featured Jamaican reggae performer Shaggy.

New Services at Pelican

On your next trip to Pelican Resort, call in at the new French bakery Au Pain de Sucre for freshly baked croissants, pastries and baguettes. Pizzas, roast chicken and Thai food are also available to go. This tasty new option is located in the building where the doctor’s surgery used to be, along from tennis court IV and in front of The Red Piano.

The Pelican Resort now has a jewelry store for special gifts and stunning souvenirs. For many years a Philipsburg favorite, Splash Jewelry has two outlets on site, one in the Casino building and the other in the lobby at Pelican Marina Residences.

Finally, the new lobby bar at Pelican Marina Residences is the perfect spot for a cocktail or an after-dinner drink. There is satellite TV for sports, movies and other special events.

Pelican Marina Residences crew wins Regatta

The Pelican Marina Residences sailing team notched up another victory on March 2 by winning the Heineken warm-up Regatta in the Spinnaker Class. Skippered by Dr. Frits Bus, the team of Rien Korteknie, Berit Bus, Garth Steyn and Joep Groenendijk won both of the races scheduled for this event. The first race took place in Simpson Bay and the second followed a course from Great Bay to Mullet Bay and back to Simpson Bay.

This victory followed earlier success in the Necol Regatta, February 9 and 10, one of the most important events in the island lagoon sailing calendar. On this occasion, the team dominated the field on points and won nine of the 15 races, despite strong gusts of wind and challenging conditions.

The crew also competed in the Heineken Regatta, coming fourth overall in the Spinnaker Class 5 and the Budget Marine Commodore’s Cup.
